A brief history of Andrew Cope

Andrew was born 2 Mar 1781 in Frederick, Tennessee. It is possible that William Cope (1753-1793) and Sarah Holland (1760-1800) were his parents.

As a very young man, Andrew was briefly married to an [unknown] Robertson who must have died shortly thereafter. Andrew then married Sarah Wallace (an immigrant from Scotland) in approximately 1811.
[Researcher Note: I can find no first-hand records to substantiate the dates and people. This information comes primarily from family tree information off of the internet. However, Andrew's children's lives are followed closely from 1850 forward as evidenced in their summaries on their mother's pages.]

Andrew's children from his second wife Sarah Wallace include: Elizabeth, Cynthia, John W, James Cope, Wallace B, and Wiley. Sarah died abt 1822 in White County, Tennessee. [Researcher Note: The date for the eldest daughter, Elizabeth appears, to be after the death of his first wife, (Mrs. Robertson) -- and nearly a decade before the date suggested for his marriage with Sarah Wallace.]

In approximately 1823 Andrew married for the third time to Elizabeth Mason/ Their children included: Andrew Jackson, Madison H, Sara, Susan, Nancy, Matilda, Charlotte, Mason L, Melcena, Joshua David M, and Margaret.

The Cope family had a close association with the James Johnson family. First Matilda married Stokley D. Johnson, and then following her death in 1859, her younger sister Melcena married Stokley. Then, Andrew's youngest daughter, Margaret married Stephen W. Johnson.

On May 18, 1862 Andrewe passed away in White County, Tennessee. He was buried in MT Gilead Cemetery in Sparta (White County), Tennessee. Elizabeth (Mason) Cope passed away April 8, 1868 in White County and is also buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery.
