A brief history of Beulah Bell Johnson

Beulah Bell Johnson was born to Clodia Margaret Wyatt and Sidney L. Johnson on 18 May 1907 in Tennessee. She was the youngest of nine children.

Beulah is cited in the 1910 U.S. census in Civil District 1, Macon, Tennessee with her parents and siblings. In the 1920 U.S. census, she is listed as living in Lafayette, Macon, Tennessee with her parents and siblings.

Beulah lost both of her parents as a young woman, with her father dying when she was 18 and her mother dying the following year when she was just 19 years of age.
{Researcher Note: I have been unable to find Beulah in the 1930 census.]

On 27 November 1932, Beulah married Elbert Ray Brockette in Macon County, Tennessee. The service was performed by Carl White, JP. Elbert Ray Brockette was born 11 Feb 1906 in Texas to Otis N. (Osborn) and Willie E. Brockette.

Beulah was a school teacher in Macon County, Tennessee; however, when her son was born, she stayed home to take care of him and the household. Beulah enjoyed to knit and she was an excellent cook. At one time, Elbert worked in Michigan at Ford Motor Co. Then later he was also a tobacco grader in Johnson City, Tennessee. For a short time, in 1942 Beulah and Elbert's son went to school in Johnson City. He and his mother Beulah would travel back to Macon County on the train. The soldiers would buy the young Johnson boy ice cream and cold drinks. They thought he was cute and friendly, and the soldiers were very nice to him and his mother Beulah. Elbert eventually became assistant to the postmaster at the post office in Lafayette, Tennessee. He loved to duck hunt, fish, and watch his son play football.

Not long after finding out that he had cancer, Elbert passed away in 1970 and is buried in the Macon County Memorial Gardens in Lafayette, Macon County, Tennessee. Beulah had Parkinson's disease and in her last days lived in a nursing home, where she passed away passed away December 19, 1974 and is also buried in the Macon County Memorial Gardens. Their son remains living in Tennessee and he has one daughter.

[Researcher Note: I remember my Aunt Beulah, Grandma Pearl's younger sister, as a sweet and gracious woman who always had time to amuse the children. She never seemed to have her nose in the air, but she was kind to children and fun to be around.]
