A brief history of James Johnson

James was born about 1799 in Tennessee. His parents are not known. Approximately 1927 James married "Temperance." Her maiden name is unknown. As their eldest daughter Sarah was born in Tennessee, it is likely they were married in Tennessee. By 1850 they were living in Hawkins, Tennessee.

Their daughter Martha was 4 years old in the 1850 census, but then in the 1860 census, they have another daughter named Martha who is nine. It is assumed that their first little girl named Martha likely died in 1950, and they named their very next child after her.

In the 1860 census, James and Temperance were living in White County, Tennessee, where they appear to have remained. The 1870 census shows James and Temperance in White County. The 1880 census shows James living with their daughter Susan. The 1880 U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules lists Temperance dying in May 1880. Burial is unknown but assumed to be in White County, Tennessee. The assumption is that James likely died in the 1880's.
