A brief history of Charles Edwin Johnson

Charles Edwin Johnson was born to Clodia Margaret Wyatt and Sidney L. Johnson on 22 Feb 1888 in Chestnut Mound, Smith County, Tennessee. He was the second of nine children, and after the death of his brother Herschel (at 18 years of age), Charles became the eldest living son.

Charles is cited in the 1900 U.S. census in Civil District 8, Smith County, Tennessee with his parents and siblings. In the 1910 census, Charles and his brother Clyde had gone west. They were working as gold miners in Maiden, Fergus, Montana -- likely trying to make their fortunes.

Charles married Bonnie Avant on 30 Mar 1915 in Smith County, Tennessee. Bonnie was born 9 Nov 1892 in Tennessee to Nannie Matilda (Reynolds) and Matthew Avant.

Charles registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 while living in Denton, Fergus County, Montana, where he was working as a merchant. The store was named the "Golden Rule" Store. Their oldest child, Charles Edwin Johnson, Jr. was born on 16 July 1917, but died just two days later on July 18th in Denton, Montana.

In the 1920 census Charles and his family were living in Big Spring, Fergus, Montana. Charles was listed as a Dry Goods Salesman.

By 1923, Charles and Bonnie moved to Texas, where they would remain for the rest of their lives.

Wanda Avant Johnson was born on 15 Dec 1923 in Hunt County, Texas to Bonnie and Charles.

In the 1930 census, the Johnson family had moved to Childress, Childress, Texas. Charles is listed there as manager of a dry goods store.

Bonnie died 15 Feb 1982 in Plainview, Hale, Texas. Charles died 25 December 1977 in Amarillo, Potter, Texas. According to their Grandson (Charles Phelan), Charles was originally buried in Amarillo, Texas; however, when Bonnie died, their bodies were both buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.   (Their daughter Wanda passed away on May 22, 2016 in Farmington, New Mexico. She is buried in the Fairview Cemetery (North Section) in Memphis, Texas.)

[Researcher Note: Uncle Charlie was wealthy. He had invested heavily in the JC Penny Company and family lore said he owned 1/3 of the JC Penny Company before the Great Depression. True or not, he lost everything in the 1929 Stock Market crash. He rebuilt his wealth from the ground up. I well remember Uncle Charlie showing my father and brother the stocks he owned. As they went through the stock pages, there was hardly a stock that he did not own. He explained that he had learned the importance of diversifying so that he would never lose his fortune again.]
