A brief history of Hayden Harry Johnson

Hayden Harry Johnson was born to Clodia Margaret Wyatt and Sidney L. Johnson on 27 Jun 1895 in Chestnut Mound, Smith County, Tennessee. He was the fourth out of nine children.

Hayden is cited in the 1900 U.S. census in Civil District 8, Smith County, Tennessee with his parents and siblings. Again in the 1910 census, Hayden was listed as living with his family in Civil District 1, Macon County, Tennessee.

Hayden registered for the WWI draft on 5 June 1917 while living in Akron, Summit, Ohio, where he was working as a "rubber worker" for the BF Goodrich Company.

On 24 Jul 1918 Hayden enlisted into the United States Army at Hartsville, Tennessee. Hayden served in World War I in the 157 Depot Brigade to 26 Aug 1918; with Co L 12 Infantry to 15 Sept 1918; followed by Co M 163 Infantry to 15 Oct 1918; and then with Headquarters Company 305 Infantry to Discharge Private American Expeditionary Forces 18 Sept 1918 to 2 Apr 1919. Hayden received an Honorable discharge on 17 May 1919. Hayden's service in the war cost him personally a great deal as he was wounded and suffered the rest of his life with a great deal of pain.

In the 1920 U.S. census, Hayden and his sister Lillian were boarding with their Aunt Agnes Moore in Coventry, Summit, Ohio. [The direct connection between the Johnsons and Agnes Moore is not known by this researcher.] Hayden and Lillian were working at a Rubber Factory, with Hayden's occupation listed as: "Cuts plyes" and Lillian's as "Office Work". [Summit County is the Rubber Capital of the world.]

On 22 January 1928, Hayden married Caroline "Carrie" Viola Sliger in Sumner County, Tennessee. Carrie was born 2 December 1890 in Tennessee to Nancy Tennesse (DeWeese) (1855-1930) and William Elias Sliger (1855-1939). Her siblings included James Franklin Sliger (1875-1946) and William Houston Sliger (1885-1946). In the 1900 census, Carrie is cited in the 1900 census as living in Bedford County, Tennessee with her parents and siblings. [Researcher Note: I cannot find Carrie in the 1910 or 1920 census. I would assume that she was likely teaching at a school somewhere in Tennessee.

In the 1930 census, Hayden and Carrie were living in District 1 of Macon County, Tennessee. Hayden is listed as a manager of a farm, while Carrie's occupation is listed as a public school teacher.

Hayden died in December 1973 in Lafayette, Macon County, Tennessee. It is unknown when or where Carrie died. Their burial sites are also unknown.

[Researcher Note: By the time I was old enough to remember, Uncle Hayden was bent over in pain most of the time. His WWI Draft Registration states that he is of medium height; however, his painful posturing left him to appear very short in stature. My Momma always said that Carrie was a very sweet Aunt to her and a wonderful wife to Hayden who worked throughout her life in order to provide for the family when Uncle Hayden's health wouldn't permit it.
