Kizziah Ann Malissa Goolsby
Born: 30 Oct 1823 Coffee County, Tennessee
A brief history of Kizziah Ann Malissa Goolsby
Kizziah was born approximately 1828 in Tennessee. Her father's name was Samuel; however, her mother's name is not known.
On the 6th of April 1845 in Lincoln County, Kizziah married Absalom Green Runnels. Absalom was born 30 Oct 1823 in Coffee County, Tennessee to Jane M Cawthorn and James B. Reynolds.
Kizziah and Absalom's son William James was born in Lincoln County, but by the time their daughter Nancy J was born, the family had relocated to Franklin County, Tennessee. In the 1850 census the family is in the 6th District of Franklin County. In the 1860 census, they remained in Franklin County, but were listed in the 15th District at the Ridgeville Post Office.
Absalom and Kizziah's children included William James, Nancy J, Martha E, Amzira Anthony, John P, Samuel, Thomas Benton, Louella, David Felix and Rufus. All of their children were born in Tennessee; however, the family took a brief sojourn into Kentucky where they were listed in Lynville in Graves County in the 1870 census.
Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Kizziah must have passed away, because Absalom is listed as widowed in the 1880 census in the 5th/6th District of Lincoln County.
Absalom appears to have used his middle name "Green" most of the time. He also appears to have used the variation of "Runnels" instead of Reynolds. His occupation is listed as "farmer" on the censuses, describing himself as "cropping" on the 1870 census. After Kizziah passed away, Absalom remarried September 21, 1881 to E Ailsey Mobley in Lawrence County, Tennessee.
Absalom passed away approximately 1895 in Henryville, Lawrence County, Tennessee. It is unknown where Kizziah was buried.
[Researcher Note: The last name of Goolsby is speculative. Options used by researchers include Guslay, Ouslay, Gooselburry and other variations. The reason that I have chosen to go with Goolsby is that on the 1950 census, there are other Goolsby's cited in the same county as Kizziah and Absalom. Kirby and Mahala Goolsby and family are listed in the 7th District of Franklin County (page 10 of 13). Kizziah and Absalom's family are in the 6th District of Franklin County. There are many Goolsby families in White and Jackson Counties in Tennessee in the 1850 census. It is notable, however, that I cannot find a Samuel Goolsby in earlier decades when Kizziah was reportedly born in 1827 in Tennessee. In other censuses, there appear to be a plethora of Goolsby families in Tennessee; whereas, alternate possibilities ofGuslay and Ouslay appear to show no findings. In the 1920 census, there is a family called Gooslby... which I take as a likely misspelling of Goolsby. On the other hand, there is a Samuel S. Ousley who married Nancy Francis in 1826 in Virginia (U.S. and International Marriage Records). This would have been in time for Kissiah to be born in 1827. Samuel was born in Virginia. They would have had to emigrate to Tennessee immediately after marriage as Kizziah was born in Tennessee. The spelling of Kizziah is also speculative with Kissiah, Keziah, Kessiah, all as other possibilities.]
