A brief history of Matilda (Cope) Johnson

Matilda was born May 17, 1831 to Elizabeth (Mason) and Andrew Cope in White County, Tennessee.

The Cope children included: Andrew Jackson, Madison H, Sara, Susan, Nancy, Matilda, Charlotte, Mason L, Melcena, Joshua David M, and Margaret. Her father Andrew had previously been married to a Sarah Wallace and their children (Melcena's half siblings) included: Elizabeth, Cynthia, John W, James Cope, Wallace B, and Wiley.

September 22, 1853 Matilda Cope married Stokley (S. D.) Johnson in White County, Tennessee. (Stokley was born April 22, 1832 in Hawkins County, Tennessee.) Stokley and Matilda made their home in White County, Tennessee and had at least two children together: Sarah E and Nancy M.

July 15, 1859, Matilda passed away. [Unsubstantiated]. It is unknown where she is buried.

Apparently around 1860, Stokley then married Matilda's sister Melcena Cope. [Can find no record of the marriage.]   Melcena was born January 15, 1836. Together, she and Stokley had four children, including: Alonzo Pendleton, Lorenzo G., Samantha D, and Cora A. In the 1860 and 1870 censuses, Stokley is listed as a "farmer". In the 1880 census, Stokley is listed as a "merchant and farmer."

January 29, 1891, Stokley passed away in Sparta, White County, Tennessee. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Doyle (White County), Tennessee. On January 26, 1918, Melcena Cope passed away in White County. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Doyle, (White County), Tennessee.
