A brief history of Melcena (Cope) Johnson

Melcena was born January 15, 1836 to Elizabeth (Mason) and Andrew Cope in White County, Tennessee.

The Cope children included: Andrew Jackson, Madison H, Sara, Susan, Nancy, Matilda, Charlotte, Mason L, Melcena, Joshua David M, and Margaret. Her father Andrew had previously been married to a Sarah Wallace and their children (Melcena's half siblings) included: Elizabeth, Cynthia, John W, James Cope, Wallace B, and Wiley.

Melcena's older sister Matilda was married to Stokley Johnson and they had two children: Sarah and Nancy. However, Matilda passed away July 15, 1859. Melcena stepped into her sister's role, marrying Stokley and raising his two children. [She and Stokley must have married around 1860; however, I can find no record of the marriage. Stokley and Melcena would add four more children to their brood, including Alonzo Pendleton, Lorenzo G., Samantha D, and Cora A.

January 29, 1891, Stokley passed away in Sparta, White County, Tennessee. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Doyle (White County), Tennessee.

Following Stokley's death, Melcena continued to live in White County. In the 1900 census, she was with her daughter Samantha (Sparkman) and family. In the 1910 census, Melcena was living with her son Alonzo and family in White County.

On January 26, 1918, Melcena Cope passed away in White County. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Doyle, Tennessee.
