Martha M Coleman (12 Oct 1821)

Martha M Coleman was born 12 October 1821 to Jane (Cawthorn) and James B. Reynolds.

There is no other information known about Martha; however, her brother John Coleman was married to a Martha. Was the Martha listed here in reality John Coleman's wife and not the daughter of Jane and James? Or were there two Martha Reynolds (Runnels)? It is unknown where Martha died or where she is buried.

James Jonathan Milledge Runnels (1821)

James Jonathan Milledge Runnels was born about 1821 to Jane (Cawthorn) and James B. Reynolds. James married Cynthia Cindora Sanders on 10 August 1839 in Franklin County, Tennessee. Their children include

  • William M Runnels b. 1840 in Tennessee who married Susan RE Pollock on 15 September 1859 in Franklin County, Tennessee. They had at least one son: Robert Milledge Runnels who was born 1 July 1860 in Tennessee and who passed away 2 Feb 1943 in Coffee County, Tennessee.   William died at the age of only 23, while his wife Susan lived until 1910.

  • Sarah Elizabeth Runnels was born in 1843 in Winchester, Franklin, Tennessee. She married Zachariah W. Webb on 3 January 1866 in Franklin County, Tennessee. Their children included William T (1865), Mary C. (1869), Ruth A (1871), Louis F (1875) and Robert Z (1878). It is unclear when Sarah died; however, in the 1910 U.S. census, there is a Sarah E Weff, age 68, listed as living with a Lewis F (age 33) in Garner, Johnston, Oklahoma.

  • Mary Elizabeth Anne Runnels was born 15 Nov 1844 in Winchester, Franklin, Tennessee. She married Samuel Asberry Kitchens (1840-1916). Their children included Martha L (1968-1968), James Melton (1869-1870), Sally Esther [Hall] (1871-1895), Samuel Lee Wesley (1874-1900), Thomas Louis Jefferson (1873-1895), Winney Adeline [Runnels] (1880-1930+), Willie Newton (1881-1952), and Sedonia Lora [Whitford] (1884-1931). Mary Elizabeth is found in the 1850 census in Lincoln County, Tennessee with her parents James and Cynthia, but then returns to Franklin County, where she lives until her death 30 Aug 1888. She is buried in Kitchens Cemetery #1 there.

  • Nancy Adaline Runnels was born about 1846 in Tennessee. She married Thomas Jefferson Grant (1839-1924) on 25 July 1866 in Franklin County, Tennessee. Their children included [at least] James Bryson (1867-1909), Samuel (1868), Ardenia (1869-1941), William N (1872-1933), and Chila M (1874). Nancy Adeline died in 1892 in Franklin County, Tennessee. She is buried in Owl Hollow Cemetery in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee. Her gravestone lists her name as spelled "Adaline Reynolds -- wife of Thomas J Grant". Her husband Thomas Jefferson Grant died in 1924 in Franklin County, Tennessee. He is also buried in Owl Hollow Cemetery.

  • Amanda J Runnels was born in 1852 in Franklin County, Tennessee. No other information is known.
  • John M Runnels was born about 1853 in Franklin County, Tennessee. He married Betsy McKenzie. [Unable to find marriage record.] Their children included Thomas (1871), Sallie (1873), John (1876), and Alfred Henderson (1877), and George William (1898-1967)

  • Winny C. Runnels was born about 1855 in Franklin County, Tennessee. She married Wade M Kitchens in Franklin County, Tennessee. Their children included Green (1872), George (1874), William (1875) and Lillie L (1878). It is unknown when Winny died; however, she is listed in the 1880 US Census in Precinct 2, Cooke County, Texas.

John Coleman (1822)

John Coleman Runnels was born 1 Jun 1822 in Tennessee to Jane M (Cawthorn) and James B. Reynolds.

On 11 Mar 1842 a Coleman Runnels married a Martha Runnels in Lincoln, County, Tennessee. Although it is not certain, it would fit because in the 1850 census in Subdivision 2, Lincoln, Tennessee, John Coleman Runnels is cited with his wife Martha and their 7 year old son William F, their 5 year old son Elijah J, their 3 year old son John M and their 1 year old Reuben F.

In the 1860 census in Lynchburg Post Office, District 1, Lincoln, Tennessee, a JC Runnels (38) is listed with wife Martha (26) and their children: Wm Runnels 27, James Runnels 15, John Runnels 13, Rubin Runnels 10, Lafayette Runnels 8. It does present some difficulties as it lists J C Runnels' birthplace as Alabama. William Runnels is listed at age 27 (instead of 17); however, review of the record shows a 1 drawn over the 2 (or vice versa)... I believe it could be interpreted as age 17 as easily as it was age 27. In addition, John Coleman's brother, Jacob Conner B Runnels and his mother Jane are located on page 16 (while J C Runnels is located on page 18 of the census).

Absalom Green Runnels (1823-1895)

Absalom Green Reynolds (also known as Runnels) was born on the 30th of October 1823 in Coffee County, Tennessee to Jane M Cawthorn and James B Reynolds.   On the 6th of April 1845, Absalom married... To go to a separate page with additional information for Absalom click here.

William P Runnels (1825)

William P Runnels was born 28 Nov 1825 in Tennessee. On 17 Mar 1848 he married Elizabeth Gambel in Lincoln County, Tennessee. They had one known son: Gibson (b. 1849). It is likely that William and Elizabeth died before the 1860 U.S. census, because their son Gibson was cited in that census as living with his Grandmother Jane (Cawthorn) Runnels in (Lynchburg Post Office), District 1, Lincoln County, Tennessee.

Reuben W Runnels (1827)

Reuben W Runnels was born 2 Dec 1827 in Tennessee. On 28 June 1852 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, Reuben married Elizabeth Sikes. Elizabeth was born in 1825 in Fayetteville, Lincoln, Tennessee to Hannah and Howell Sikes. Reuben and Elizabeth's children included:

  • David Runnels (1854)
  • Newton Runnels (1858)
  • Jasper Runnels (1859)
It is unknown when or where Reuben and his wife passed away or where they are buried.

Edward G B Runnels (1830)

Edward G B Runnels was born on 10 Oct 1830 in Tennessee. He married Malinda Gambel who was born in Georgia. It is unknown whether there is any relationship between Malinda Gambel and William's wife Elizabeth Gambel who was born in Pennsylvania. Edward passed away 1 June 1853 in Lincoln County, Tennessee leaving his widow and two children. No further information is known about Malinda Runnels.

Jacob Conner B Runnels (1833)

Jacob Conner B Runnels was born on 5 May 1833. On 22 May 1856 he married Elizabeth C Simmons in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Elizabeth was born about 1840 in Tennessee. Their children included:

  • James Runnels was born in 1857 in Lincoln County, Tennessee
  • Sara Ann Runnels was born in 1858 in Lincoln County, Tennessee
  • Martha Runnels was born in 1860 in Lincoln County, Tennessee
It is unknown when or where Jacob Conner B Runnels or his wife Elizabeth C Simmons passed away or where they are buried.
