A brief history of Sidney L. Johnson

Sidney Lycurgis Johnson was born January 22, 1864 in White County, Tennessee to Margaret R (Cope) and Stephen W. Johnson.

In addition to Sidney, the Johnson children included: Mary Agnes, Luticia S, Nettie Belle, Charles Edward, Francis C, Flora Eller, James Wallace, William F, and Ollie Etta.

In 1870, the Stephen and Margaret Johnson were living in White County, Tennessee. In the 1880 census, the Johnson family was cited in White County, Tennessee. At 16 years of age, Sidney is working as a salesman in a store.

On May 18, 1884 in Smith County, Tennessee Sidney married7,8,9 Clodia Margaret Wyatt, the daughter of Sarah A (Dillard) and William F. Wyatt. Clodia was born in Tennessee on November 17, 1868.

Sidney and Clodia raised a large family in Smith County Tennessee including: William Herschel (1885 1903), Charles E (1888 1977), Clyde C (1891 ), Lillian E (1893 1985), Hayden Harry (1895 1973), Henry Clay (1898 1988), Pearl Dimple (1902 ), John Wyatt (1904 1970), Beulah Bell (1907 1974).

In the 1900 census, the Johnsons were located in Smith County, Tennessee. Sidney's occupation is listed as a merchant of dry goods. (Son Herschel is a salesman.)

Tragedy struck the Johnson family when their eldest son William Herschel died at the age of 18. He had been swimming in a river with a friend when the other boy began to drown. Herschel tried to save him, but was drowned on June 28, 1903.

In both the 1910 census and the 1920 census, the Johnson family were living in Macon County, Tennessee.   (Macon is a neighboring county to Smith county). In 1910 Sidney was working as a farmer. In 1920 Sidney was manager of a grocery store.

On March 13, 1926 Sidney passed away in Macon County, Tennessee. Clodia passed away less than a year later on January 15, 1927, also in Macon County, Tennessee.
