A brief history of Dick Welch

"Dick" (Richard Raymond Welch) was born on 14 Jul 1894 in Regnier in Oklahoma Territory to Frank George Welch and Amelia Pauline Raesler. They lived two or three miles east of Regnier, Oklahoma, in the Oklahoma panhandle in what was then Oklahoma Territory. It was just east of what is now Kenton, Oklahoma. Cattle ranching was their livelihood.

The Frank and Amelia Welch family moved again, onto the Conkle place by the Cimmaron River in southeastern Colorado. One day their youngest daughter was playing with fire and accidentally set the house on fire. It burned to the ground and everything was lost.

Frank and Amelia Welch then moved into a two room rock and mud house 21 miles west of Campo, Colorado. Frank Welch added to this house four more rooms and a front and back porch. Around it was his many rock collections. Beautiful yellow roses bloomed abundantly in the yard. It became the family ranch house. As the children reached twenty one, they all homesteaded around the ranch until they owned a very large cattle ranch.

June 5, 1917, Dick registered for the draft for World War I. He was living in Regnier, Colorado and working for himself farming and "stockraising."

On 28 Mar 1920 Dick married Lillie Pearl Wiley at the rural minister's house, John H. Welborn in Pritchett, Colorado. The young family would homestead near the Frank Welch homestead. It was a hard life, with the family living in a hand-built rock and mud house. They raised their six children with the back breaking labor of their hands. They would eventually expand their little home to include a lean-to kitchen. Their children were Bessie Louise, Thelma Lucy, Nellie Pearl, Douglas Grant, Dale Roger, and Mary Alice.

Dick Welch was not an easy man to live with. He was physically harsh with his wife, and when she had finally had enough, Lillie left to create a new life for herself in Oregon and then California. To his dying day, Dick would always ask after Lillie and would always comment, "Lillie was a good woman."

After their divorce, Dick decided to look up his childhood sweetheart Alice Caddick who had married a Mr. John Garrard. Dick located the recently widowed Alice in New Mexico. (In 1942, John Garrard and two of their daughters, (Rose and Jewel) drowned in a terrible accident. The family was attempting to cross the Rio Grande River during a flood in a cable bucket, when the bucket broke. Alice was devastated and emotionally distraught.) When Dick found her, he convinced her to marry him and he brought Alice and her three youngest children back with them to Lamar, Colorado to live where Dick's three youngest children still lived with him (Douglas, Dale and Mary.)

Dick and Alice made their home in Lamar, Colorado, Dick ran cattle on his ranch part of the time

Alice passed away on 2 Aug 1974 in Lamar, Prowers County, Colorado. She was buried in the Fairmont Cemetery in Lamar, Colorado with Rev. Gilbert officiating.

For a short while, Dick went to live in California with his daughter Thelma; however, it was a very difficult transition. Dick returned to Colorado where he passed away in Canon City, Fremont County, Colorado at 9:05 p.m. May 23, 1976 of cardiac arrhythmia and acute myocardial infarction. Dick is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar, Colorado.
