A brief history of Sarah A (Dillard) Wyatt

Sarah A Dillard was born about 1835 in Tennessee to Aletha and George R. Dillard. Sarah's siblings include:   Elizabeth Dillard (1824-1880), Alexander A Dillard (1824-1898), James L Dillard (1828-1891), Henry W Dillard (1830), George L Dillard (1840), John L Dillard (1845), Aletha Dillard (1847), Louisa Dillard (1848), and Mary Dillard (1850).

In 1840, a G R Dillard was listed in the U.S. Federal Census in Smith County, Tennessee (on the same page as Sarah's future father-in-law Frederick Wyatt.) In the 1850 US Census, Sarah, age 14 was living with her parents and siblings "North of Cumberland and East of Caney Fork Rivers, Smith, Tennessee."

Sarah married someone probably in the late 1850's or early 1860's; however, she was evidently widowed not long afterward. There were either no children from that union or they did not survive. [A marriage record to Croslin could not be located. I also could not find Sarah in the 1860 census.]

On October 31, 1866, Sarah married William F Wyatt in Smith County, Tennessee. [On the records, her name is listed as Cransland; however, it is more likely that the name is Croslin.]

William F. Wyatt was born November 11, 1830 to Mary and Frederick G. Wyatt in Tennessee.

In the 1870 census, William and Sarah were living in Smith County, Tennessee with their children. [Researcher Note: Although the census shows two children: Fred E, age 3 and Anna T, age 1, I believe that this was an error by the census taker. Claudia E would have been between 2 and 3 and Arra T was 1. This is the specific area that the family is from "north of Cumberland and East of Caney Fork Rivers in Smith County.]

By 1880, the census shows that William and Sarah had added two sons to their family: James G and Woodson. The Wyatt family were living in Chestnut Mound, Smith County, Tennessee. [Researcher Note: I believe Chestnut Mound to be the very same area as North of Cumberland... Also of note here is that in this census, William is the enumerator or census taker.] The 1890 Tennessee census that counted Veterans, continued to show the William Wyatt family remaining in Smith County, Tennessee.

Sarah passed away 20 Oct 1896 in Chestnut Mound, Smith, Tennessee. She was buried in Wyatt Cemetery in Chestnut Mound.

In the 1900 census, William and his son Woodson remained living in Smith County, Tennessee. His daughter Clodia, who was now married to Sidney Johnson lived closeby and was listed as the second family below William in the census.

William passed away on 5 July 1901 in Chestnut Mound, Smith, Tennessee and was buried at Wyatt Cemetery in Chestnut Mound.

[Researcher Note: In Alexander Funeral Home Records regarding Woodson Wyatt's death, it listed Woodson's father as William Wyatt and his mother as Sarah Dillard -- which continues to substantiate that Sarah was indeed a Dillard.
